Hunting Can Be Rewarding Or Disappointing

March 20, 2010 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

Hunters will sometimes make the effort to get up very early in the morning. They will try to quietly get all their gear together and not disturb the rest of the house who are sleeping. They want to get a jump on the daylight, and be in their tree stands in plenty of time to be settled and still, and not spook the deer on their way.

Sometimes, if you live with other people, getting out of the house quietly without disturbing them is the biggest challenge of your day. Many times I have tried to slip through the house with my gear, only to trip over the dyson all floors vacuum my mother bought the week before and I forgot was there. I woke everybody up as my gun and ammo went flying across the room.

I have just stood up out of my bed, still about half asleep, and knocked over my alvarez acoustic guitar, and the sound from that would wake the dead. I could hear mumbling from other rooms as I picked it up and put it back in its place. Sometimes, the whole day just starts off wrong. Very seldom have I ever made a totally quiet exit. But the few times I did, I was very proud.

By now, I was really losing time as far as my early start was concerned. I was losing precious minutes, and had managed to wake everyone up. I could hear them mumbling as I finally was able to get through the door with everything I needed. I threw everything into the truck, checked my new leather watch, and knew I had to really make up for time while driving.

I laid on the gas, and made up for lost time. I parked and began to get myself prepared for the trip into the woods and climbing into my tree stand. Hunters all have their little tricks for doing things, and I had a few of my own as well. Once loaded, I shined my flashlight onto the path and was on my way.

I saw that my timing was good, and any time I had lost was made up for. It was perfect. My mind began to go back to the house, and I could see myself tripping over the vacuum with everything flying across the room, and I began to smile. Then remembered that awful sound of the guitar hitting the floor, and I began to giggle out loud.

It was funny to think about how my early start probably made everybody else late. And about two to three hours after daylight, I thought something else was funny too. After all that aggravation, of getting up early, getting my gear ready, picking up things I knocked over, and making my way to this tree stand, I had not see the first deer, and only had a runny nose and frozen feet to show for my efforts.

Camping in Las Vegas

October 29, 2009 · Filed Under Camping · Comment

There are three words that I never imagined I’d ever say in a single sentence : Las Vegas camping.  Somehow the terms just don’t appear to mesh, do they ?.  This is probably why I told my hubby he was crazy when he said that he scheduled a Las Vegas camping trip last year.

When many of us think about Las Vegas, campgrounds aren’t the very first thing that suggests itself.  With all of the top Las Vegas hostels available, all the casinos and shows, many of us never think about this as a destination even if we love the great outdoors.  However, as well as being one of the best resorts for travellers who prefer to live the high life, Vegas is also one of the best places to enjoy outdoor life.  Vegas camping is truly top-quality.

Of course, Las Vegas camp grounds vary very seriously in quality, so you have got to do your analysis conscientiously.  Las Vegas camping is only actually a good idea if you are there for something other than the nightlife, casinos and shows. By all means take a trip or two into town but the main reason for camping should be the outdoor attractions that you will find near your campsite. The reality is, if you’d like good Vegas camping at an inexpensive price, you’ve got to get well outside of the town limits.  Otherwise, all you may find will be drive-in camping at much higher prices than you really should have to pay.  The best Las Vegas camping is along one of the streams that flow thru the state of Nevada.  For instance, you can canoe below the Hoover dam on the Colorado River.  There are many camping sites around Las Vegas, but unless you’ve a specific area in mind , or you are looking for a camping holiday that includes a trip to a show or casino then there are far more picturesque locations for you to take your vacation.

The rationale for this is that Vegas camping tends to be a bit rough.  The weather will invariably be exceedingly hot, and there is a lack of the cool shady wooded areas that the majority like on their camping trips.  This isn’t to say that you should give up on Las Vegas camping.  It can have its own rewards, but it is not for the faint of heart.  You would do much better camping up in the Northwest if you’re attempting to find a good first outdoor destination.

Spending day after day in the desert can be a truly trying experience for a novice camper.  Vegas camping, in fact , requires some of the most careful preparations that you can imagine.  If you are going to go into the desert to camp, you want to bring lots of water, the right food, and the right clothing.  Keeping cool when doing Vegas camping is almost a matter of survival.  If you don’t manage to do it, you will lose your strength quickly.  You may be marooned miles and miles from civilization.  Things can get very dark extremely quickly in the desert, so be forewarned and be prepared.  Some may suggest that you wear long sleeves and relaxed fit slacks to keep the sun off of your skin, you may want to put that recommendation aside.  The first day of our Las Vegas camping journey was really uncomfortable particularly since I was dressed from top to bottom.

Wear shorts and a t-shirt.  Trust me.  You can expect to do a large amount of walking during the Vegas camping trip and you want to keep cool.  Or you might end up feeling exhausted and uncomfortable.

With all of the walking involved on a Las Vegas camping excursion you actually wish to invest in shoes that keep your feet happy.  I discovered that my shoes were the elite of the crop and my feet were thanking me even on day one.  Shoes are just some of the most significant things to think about when arranging your Las Vegas camping trip.

Don’t forget your sun lotion.  The sun is always shining.  O.K, there’s the occasional downpour that comes out of nowhere but the rain leaves as swiftly as it comes.  I’ve never seen anything like it.  Sunscreen is an absolute must on your Las Vegas camping vacation.

Tips for a Successful Group Camping Trip

October 14, 2009 · Filed Under Camping · Comment

I do most of my camping these days with North Texas Adventures which is not a hard core camping group. These days even those who appreciate their comforts in life can enjoy camping.  If you bring an inflatable air mattress with sheets, a comforter, and pillows you’ll forget you’re not in your own bed at home!  Given how large tents are these days even a queen size mattress does not need to take up the whole tent.

If you are at a campsite with electricity, consider bringing a fan to plug in which helps beat the heat in your tent. This comes in handy in the hot Texas heat.  For colder weather camping, bring some sleeping bags for added warmth.

With today’s amenities there is no need to “rough it” on a camping trip.  Keep this in mind when you develop your guest list.Even folks that insist they don’t like to camp may enjoy modern day camping that can have much of the comforts of home.

Some of my best camping memories are sitting around the fire at night.  This is a great time to relax and tell stories of your adventures from that day, like the time I ran over a rattlesnake on my mountain bike, and my buddy, to avoid the rattlesnake ran his bike straight into a cactus!  Ouch!  Meanwhile you can roast some marshmallows or enjoy a few beers.

Make sure to bring lots of firewood to burn, as there is nothing worse than having the fire burn out just as the party is getting started.  Fires are so much fun that most campers will even enjoy them in warm weather.  I remember waiting for the sun to go down after a 92 degree day so we could light a fire!
One of our favorite night time activities is a good game of Texas Hold’em poker, this is very popular in our DFW Outdoors Club

This can be great for beginners who sometimes are lucky enough to bring the pot home.  This happened with my girlfriend and I was so embarrassed when she won and waved the money around in the air singing “I am the winner!” at the top of her lungs.  Fortunately for all of us, her beginner’s luck soon ran out and it was much quieter at the next game.

So make sure to bring some games or items for entertainment that appeal to your group. Some of the other items I bring for fun are a football, bean bag toss game, Frisbee, fishing poles, a bicycle and of course a deck of cards.

Don’t forget a lanten. You may need it to find your way to your tent after a beginner takes your money at poker! Finally it is important to remember, Don’t mess with Texas!  We take looking after the camp area seriously, what ever state you are in, as we do with our Dallas Fort Worth Hiking Club. Do a good deed and leave the campsite cleaner than you found it.Do a good walk through to make sure we minimize our foot print on our great state parks and camping area’s.We all appreciate you doing your part.

Thank you for reading this article and I hope these tips help you make a more successful and fun camping trip!
