Trends In Rifle Sight Development

February 21, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

The last decade has seen the universal adoption of optical sights throughout the US Forces. Even the USMC, which steadfastly stuck with iron sights on all but sniper rifles until a few years ago, has now gone to universal issue for all Marines issued with carbines or rifles as well as putting them on its new Squad Automatic Weapon, the M27, the old M249 and the M240. In the case of the US Army, soldiers with a rifle or carbine will get a CompM4s (M68 CCO) reflex sight, and those whose role it is to engage with an M16A4 rifle will be issued a TA31RCO-M150 ACOG as well. The US Army instead went for an Elcan 3.4×28 rubber armored optic with a 1200 meter reticle on its M249s and M240s, designating this the M145.

One surprising feature is that all of the sights employed by US forces were developed entirely by private companies, usually entirely with their own money. The civil market drove much of the development of these scopes, armed citizenry being a huge force for progress in this sector. This trend will continue to drive weapon sight development for the forseeable future.

Aimpoint claims to have 70,000,000 of its sights in service world-wide and has brought a new Micro range of red dot sights with 4 MOA red dots. The Micro T-1 red dot sight is only 2.4 inches long and weighs in at only 3.7 ounces with its thumb nut Picatinny rail mount and battery. That ensures it is not only a very viable back-up sight for guns fitted with larger sights as standard, but a potential for replacement of iron sights on service pistols.  No matter what weapon you have or mounting configuration you want, Aimpoint or aftermarket manufacturers like La Rue Tactical or GG&G will have mounts to match it. Aimpoint’s revolutionary ACET technology gives these units a life of approximately 5 years of continuous operation on one battery. In combination with flip-to-side or detachable magnifiers like the Eotech G23.FTS 3x magnifier it makes an highly compact and versatile package covering engagements out to perhaps four hundred meters. At greater ranges the 4 MOA dot starts to cover too much of the target.

The new XPS and EXPS holographic weapon sight ranges represent Eotech’s bid for the compact weapon sight market. These use a single transversely mounted CR123 battery to achieve battery lives in the order of 600 hours of continuous operation – a huge improvement on their old ‘N’ battery powered units. The greater power consumption of the Eotech is made up for by its unique ‘HUD’ style sighting window in which the parallax free aiming reticle can be placed anywhere, even if the rest of the window is obscured or even missing. The Eotech avoids the large dot problem by using a 1 MOA dot for fine aiming at longer distances centered in a 65 MOA circle for rapid target acquisition and centering close up. The XPS-2 XPS-3 and EXPS-3 series are inevitably bulkier and heavier than the Aimpoint Micros at 3.5 inches long and 8 to 11 ounces and are perhaps less robust, although a new, tethered screw cap with an O-ring makes battery housings spontaneously detaching a thing of the past.  The XPS-3 and EXPS-3 models are NV compatible and the EXPS-3 series transfers its buttons to the side to allow very close mounting of night vision devices. Its QR mount (unique to the EXPS – other models have thumb nuts) also places it 7mm higher to allow for co witnessing of BIUS in the bottom third of the aiming window.

Micro AR15 Mounting Options

February 21, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

The Aimpoint Micro series brought a new level of robustness to miniature red dot sights. The Aimpoint Micro’s extreme lightness (3.7 ounces with the thumbscrew secured Picatinny mount supplied) makes it suitable even for 9mm autos. The Aimpoint Micro T-1 and 3x magnifier combination has already seen service in Afghanistan.

As you would expect with a unit as instantly popular as the Micro red dot sight, both the manufacturer and aftermarket suppliers have been quick to provide the Aimpoint with sights to suit a variety of appications, from rimfire rifles to Turkey shotguns. The AR15 is far and away the most popular platform for the Aimpoint Micro series red dot sights.

Aimpoint obviously wanted to have a comprehensive range of mounts in place for the Aimpoint T1 micro right from the start. Aimpoint include a very satisfactory thumb nut operated MIL STD 1913 rail mount with all their Micro sights. The manufacturer offers an Aimpoint Micro Quick Release Kit to change the knurled nut fixing mount supplied with the sight to quick release configuration. This is an all steel unit which neatly replaces the thumb nut. The base of the standard mount can also be replaced by an Aimpoint Micro Rinfire Adapter which interfaces with the standard 3/8″ US or 11mm dovetails found on US and European rimfire rifles respectively. Aimpoint had Texas based LaRue Tactical make the Aimpoint LT660 mount which incorporates their patented locking quick release lever mechanism and puts the red dot just above the flat top M16′s front sight post This mount is at the correct height for BIUS to co-witness in the lowest 1:3 of the aiming window.

Daniel Defense decided to make a mount that would put the sight in the optimum co-witness position but make it non quick release. Daniel Defense use two large slot headed machine screws to clamp the mount to the rail, set into stainless inserts so that recoil and vibration won’t shake them loose. It offers a tunnel for the use of lower sightline iron sights and is reversible, snag free and very light at only 1.8 ounces.

The GG&G Accucam Aimpoint Micro Mount, another quality US made product, again places the T1 at the correct height for co-witnessing and uses their patented Accucam adjustable lever operated clamping mechanism that adapts even to worn or out of spec rails. The Accucam Micro Mount includes flip up lens covers to protect your investment.

A very low quick release mounting option is the  American Defense Micro Mount or AD-T1-L. This mount replaces the base supplied with the Micro and is only .31 inches or 7.8mm from the point where it contacts the underneath of the sight to contac with the rail.

The Best Steps For Hunting Safely

February 21, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

Hunting is known as a familiar outdoor recreation. Whether it’s targeted as a sport, for leisure or for sustenance, hunting requires you to be centered and tolerant. Not only that, but you are required to be vigilant as hunting is extremely risky and dangerous. Since hunting is taken into account to be one of the most dangerous activities, many safety precautions must be made to make certain your safety, as well as the protection of those around you. This cannot be emphasized enough, as your lifetime and the lives of the companions should be protected when you are going hunting. The following tips are the best pointers to maintaining your safety during hunting.

Make sure you have the correct equipment and hunting tools

Getting the correct equipment before hunting is the first consideration you have to make when getting ready for a trip. If you are planning to hunt deer, you need to have a gun or bow suitable for deer. A standard pistol, for instance, is not thought as the correct gun type for deer hunting.

Make sure your weapons are in perfect condition

It is vital that you take the right care of your weapon to maintain your defense not only for you but for other hunters too. Take the time to inspect your weapons for any types of obstructions. You may want to test fire it, too. A well-cared for weapon should not misfire or present pointless risk to yourself and your companions. A gun that has not received enough care and cleaning will most likely have a risk of misfiring, or will have a jammed barrel, in some cases.

Get some exercise and pick the clothing

Weeks before your planned hunting trip, get some exercise to help you maintain your balance and agility. After all, hunting is an activity the demands speed and strength so you will be required to condition yourself first. Additionally, you will also need to wear the correct clothing for the trip. This often includes|features] the orange vests and hats, in addition to the numerous brightly colored clothing which enables other hunters to see you. Even though camouflage may assist at stopping deer from spotting you, it stops other hunters from seeing you too. This can result in your demise, as other hunters may mistake you for just another animal.

Bring the essential necessities

A day before your hunting adventure, organize what you need to carry, for example water and food. You can’t be sure how long you will be staying or how many hours you’ll go hunting so be sure that you bring enough food and water especially, to keep you hydrated. You should also consider bringing a stun gun or bear spray in case you come face to face with aggressive animals.

Observe gun safety

It is important that the gun is pointed away from you and never at your feet. You should also avoid aiming your gun to another person. It is essential that you are certain about your target before firing. You should take this precaution at all times during a hunting trip. If the safety fails, it is always better to have your gun misfire where no one will be injured.

Three Magpul M4 Stocks

February 21, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

Magpul have an hard earned reputation wherever AR series rifles and carbines are employed. Their lineup of stocks, handguards and grips have gained worldwide acclaim and the UK MoD have just type classified the Magpul AR mag as standard to supplant an excellent but heavy H&K version. With the widespread purchase of equipment by military personnel and the boom in AR15 self-builds, Magpul stocks have become very popular.

The most basic stock in the Magpul lineup is the MOE stock or ‘Magpul Original Equipment’. This is a rugged, simple stock that allows the operator a much better cheek-weld than the issue item. As well as four sling attachment slots there is an eye for a paracord sling to be tied to. This unit is made of tough durable polycarbonate over machined aluminium and has an ultra tough A-frame construction. This stock will not auto-collapse as it has a very strong release and locking mechanism which uses a high quality stainless steel spring. Accidental actuation is stopped by placing the release lever under the comb of the stock.

The whole unit has smooth contours to avoid snagging on foliage etc. Three different lengths of rubber butt pad are are available, the milspec units coming with 30mm pads and the commercial spec. with 55mm – a 70mm is an option. There are also three heights of comb risers available, but these can only be used on the AR15 with the stock fully extended – please check that they will work with whatever weapon you intend to purchase them for before ordering.

The next model in the lineup is the CTR stock or ‘Compact/Restricted Tactical’. This is essentially the MOE with an additional, self tightening friction locking mechanism that makes the stock completely rigid when locked. It also adds a push button mount for QD swivels. Both the MOE and CTR are available in milspec or commercial versions – the milspec suitable for Colt and other manufacturer milspec buffer housings of 1.14″ outside diameter intended for four or six position adjustable stocks and the commercial for commercial AR15s with 1.17″ diameter buffer housings. Four different colors enable you to match the stock to your choice of terrain. These stocks are very simple to fit and will do so without breaching military regulations – this is not the case with their ‘Utility Battle Rifle’ or UBR stock.

The UBR stock is a great leap up in versatility offering a user selected pull out position set from seven by positioning a set screw. You can go with the standard two QD swivel push button mounts which can be swapped from side to side or pay a little extra for fully ambidextrous mounts. Totally consistent cheek-weld is ensured by having the cheek piece static whilst the rest of the stock telescopes.  The Magpul UBR is built to take the recoil of larger calibres shot off the AR15 platform and provides additional counterweight of 1.63lb to the heavy, bull barrels found on these and other sniper platforms and for carbines fitted with heavy accessories toward the front.

Magpul have thoughtfully provided a box for small items in the middle of the stock which locks securely. This can contain many useful itesm If you prefer the skeletonized look, you can simply leave it off the rifle. Smooth lines and the recessed lever prevent fouling or accidental operation. Working parts are relatively well protected from ingress of dirt and sand. Military users will be disappointed that the use of an entry length receiver extension will prevent them from adding this stock to their issue rifle. It also requires an M4 buffer and spring to fit (not included) in an AR platform and some .308 ARs may require a shorter custom buffer and buffer spring.

These stocks are intended for general purpose use on AR series rifles, but can be fitted to any weapon which allows their use, including (in the case of the MOE and CTR) bolt action rifles from Remington and Howa and shotguns. Magpul also cater to snipers and designated marksmen with other stocks which I hope to describe in future articles.

Which Reflex Sights Do US Forces Use?

February 21, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

Whilst US Special Forces had used optics on their rifles as far back as the Son Tay Raid when Singlepoint OEGs were used, the Army, Air Force and USMC were comparative latecomers to universal issue of optical sights on their weapons. To make matters less clear, individuals often sourced their own sights to add to their weapons – this is still the case today.

SOCOM lead the way by adopting both the Trijicon reflex sight and an Aimpoint CompM2 red dot sight variant- the ECOS-N – both being supplanted in turn by the Eotech SU231/PEQ (see below).

The first reflex sight adopted for widespread use by the US Army and USAF was the Aimpoint CompM2 red dot sight, adopted as the M68 Close Combat Optic. This unit is still in use but is being replaced by the Aimpoint CompM4s (low battery housing model of the CompM4), confusingly also called the M68 CCO. There are also images showing high-battery housing CompM4s in use, but these may well have been purchased by individuals or units.. Aimpoint’s tiny T-1 red dot sight is now being issued to units deploying to theatre along with the 3X flip to side magnifier, providing a combination that can cover a spectrum of engagement ranges.

The US Army adopted a variant of the Canadian Elcan – the ELCM145C, a battery illuminated 3.4X28 scope – for use on the M249 and M240 as its M145. This sight uses the torque knob mount with range compensation on via the reticle out to 1200 meters as opposed to the manually operated range cam in the mount on the original version. There is a version with an 800 meter reticle for the M4 carbine, but this is not often seen on US military carbines The Block II SOPMOD kit now includes the Elcan SpecterDR; a sight which flips from 1X to 4X and is designated the SU230/PVS Articulated Telescope. SOCOM is replacing its SU-237 ACOGs with the SU-230/PVS which has already seen service in Iraq and Afghanistan. For short range engagements the SU-230 also mounts a small red dot sight which can serve as a backup.

SOCOM adopted a version of the Eotech Holographic Weapon Sight – the Model 553 – to replace the original Aimpoint ECOS-N and Trijicon reflex sight on the BlockII version of the M4 SOPMOD kit. This sight has the military designation SU-231/PEQ (Model 553). This unit is powered by two CR123s and featured quick release mounting via twin ARMS throw levers. For swimmer delivery it is rated to 66ft depth. Individuals and units have purchased other Eotechs, including the 1st Stryker Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, 10th Mountain Division and USMC Force Recon. These tend to be 552 series AA battery models such as the 552.A65 and 552.XR308. In September 2010 Eotech won a US Naval Surface Weapons Center competition to supply $6.6M worth of Enhanced Combat Optical Sight – Heavy (ECOS-H) sights to mount on heavy/crew served weapons including those used on surface craft.

Early this century SOCOM adopted the Trijicon ACOG TA01NSN for their SOPMOD kit. This model came with a peep and post back up sight which was replaced in 2006/7 by a top mounted red dot sight – this model being referred to by the manufacturer as the TA01NSN-RMR and by the military as the SU-237.

The problem of correctly identifying targets became acute early in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq – as a stop-gap the US Marines gave ‘designated marksmen’ Trijicon TA31 ACOGs. This was so successful that the USMC decided to go to universal issue with two ACOG versions. Eotech designate these the TA31RCO-A4CP (military designation AN/PVQ-31A) and the TA31RCO-M4CP (military designation AN/PVQ-31B) for the M16A4 rifle and M4 carbine respectively. The US Army soon adopted its own version for its own M16A4s as the M150. The Marines went on to purchase their Squad Day Optic for use on their M249s and M27s. This is a 3.5X ACOG variant with a top mounted RMR reflex sight. For their M240s they went with another ACOG – this time a 6X model designated the Medium Day Sight.

Today’s Hunting Bows Are Getting Faster And Faster

January 11, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

If you want one of the fastest compound bows in the market today, get the 2010 model of the PSE X-force series. The model has been subjected to the speed testing standards of the IBO. Its rated speed is therefore official. The PSE line of bows has made several firsts in bow manufacturing history. It has succeeded in combining speed and accuracy and it has eliminated the noise and the jolting effect usually met with in speed bows.

PSE X-Force Vendetta XL

At the bottom of the hierarchy for speed, the PSE Vendetta X-Force nevertheless has a speed rating of 328 feet per second. But in spite of that speed, the model presents no pronounced resistance to being drawn back in full. This makes this model even more unique as most speed bows are difficult and to bend back and down and tend to give the user a jolt when released.

The Vendetta performs quietly and doesn’t jump back into place when released. Because the aim of the archer is undisturbed, the Vendetta is capable of maintaining the arrow in the original trajectory desired by the archer. This is a rare combination of speed and precision that was considered impossible before the PSE series hit the market.

The PSE X-Force Omen model of today’s hunting bows

The PSE X-Force Omen is similar in performance to the Vendetta, featuring the same silent operation and the same jolt-free release. Its fps is advertised at 366. It features the same double cam construction as the Vendetta and the rest of the PSE series. Again, like the Vendetta, the X-Force Omen draws back smoothly and easily. This is apparently characteristic of its double cam construction.

A pair of past parallel split limbs is responsible for minimizing the jolt, a Vibracheck backstop cushions tremors and cable guards render the device quiet. With a let-off of 70 %, the Omen is one of the fastest compound bows in the market.

PSE X-Force DreamSeason

Another one of today’s hunting bows made for speed is the PSE X-Force Dream Season. It has an fps of 356. Although not the top in speed rating the Dream Season has plenty of force packed into it. So much so that an archer will need specially made bulls-eyes to practice with the Dream Season. The model will simply drive its arrows through the normal bulls-eyes.

Its speed can only be described as making the arrow invisible while in flight. The first you see the arrow is when it is on the bow and the nest thing you know it is in the target.

Will today’s hunting bows get faster and faster

When the PSE series came out, people could not believe the 366 fps advertised speed of its fastest model. That figure is so close to the theoretical limit of speed for today’s hunting bows, which is 400 fps, that people have begun thinking if there is such a speed limit at all. The chances seem to be good that in a few years that ceiling figure will be reached and exceeded.

Hunting Lease: A Rising-Star In Hunting Activities

January 11, 2011 · Filed Under Hunting · Comment

The request for hunting lease seems to be growing in the United States. Private lands seem to promise more to the hunter than any public land area. The land owner on the other hand thus gets a supplementary revenue besides the timber income. The good part is that hunting enthusiasts are willing to organize their expeditions well in advance and they do not resent traveling a lot and putting serious money into the hunting lease contract.

A hunting lease protects the rights of both land owner and hunters. In addition to the contract, you should also get a liability insurance for your protection under the circumstances. The time period of a hunting lease can vary for periods between several days to several years. Begin by defining the county and the state to which the area subject to the hunting lease belongs.

The basic formats for hunting lease include standard hunting rights, but sometimes more specific clauses have to be included. You have to pay great attention to such variables. Mention the rent in your hunting lease, because this is a right for the land owner and an obligation for the hunter or the lessee. Spell out the exact price for the hunting privilege you offer on your land. Make sure you also include a revocation clause in the hunting lease, in case the contract is not followed to the letter.

Sometimes tenants have the tendency to interpret very broadly the entitlements in the contract. Hence, it is recommendable to be upfront about what is or isn’t allowed on your premises. In case you have to conduct land management and forestry even in the hunting season, the hunting lease should be applicable in your favor. Then, another issue that you need to pay attention to is the type of wildlife game species that hunting guests can hunt on your property.

For endangered species the law is the same on public lands and private properties. The hunting lease must further stipulate where and how smokes and fire can be used, and it also needs to refer to the disputes resulting from damage to livestock, fences or roads. Before starting the hunting expedition, the hunters should be accompanied by the landowner or an agent in order to make the initial inspection.

Tips for you, many hunting enthusiasts like to show off their gun collection, but showing your firearms to just anyone is not a very good idea and can lead to a lot of bad consequences. This is why it is necessary to use biometric gun safes to display your collection of guns. With many safe manufacturers offering a biometric model to keep up with the trend, it will be a great idea if you read the gun safe reviews first.
