Camping is a popular outdoor recreational activity, where campers travel away from their homes in the City to enjoy nature while spending one or more nights at a campsite. Campers may use a tent, a lean-to or other primitive structure, or have no shelter at all. Governments and Local Authorities often have laws to restrict camping to designated sites to protect the environment by ensuring that appropriate facilities like toilets and showers are available.

Camping as a recreational activity became popular in the early 20th century. Campers frequent national parks, other publicly owned natural areas, and privately owned campgrounds.

Camping can describe a range of activities. Survivalist campers set off with little more than their boots, whereas recreational vehicle travelers arrive equipped with their own electricity, heat, and patio furniture. Camping is often undertaken in conjunction with other activities like hiking, swimming, fishing and orienteering. It may be combined with hiking either as backpacking or as a series of day hikes from a central location.

Some people holiday in permanent camps with cabins and other facilities (such as hunting camps or children’’s summer camps), but staying at such camps is usually not considered real ”camping”. Camping is also referred to colloquially as “roughing it” as you don”t have the little luxuries and creature comforts of home.
